When Is the Best Time to Dive in Tulum?

Tulum offers year-round diving opportunities, but the experience can vary depending on the season. Whether you’re planning to dive in the ocean or explore the magical cenotes, here’s what you need to know to choose the perfect time for your adventure.

Caribbean Seasons at a Glance

The Caribbean has two main seasons: dry and wet.

  • Dry Season (December to June): This is the most popular time to visit. The weather is generally sunny with very little rain, fewer mosquitos, and lower humidity. Temperatures are especially pleasant from December to March, making it the high season for tourism.
  • Wet Season (June to December): Expect higher humidity and more frequent rainfall. While it can feel hotter, the lush jungle thrives, and you’ll find fewer crowds—especially in the cenotes.

Ocean Diving Conditions

Ocean diving in Tulum is mostly influenced by wind conditions rather than rain. If the wind is too strong and creates large waves, the port may close for safety reasons, which means boats can’t go out and visibility in the water can be affected.

  • Windy Season (January to April): Kite surfers love this time of year, but divers should be aware that wind conditions may occasionally limit access to the ocean.
  • Storms (mainly in the wet season): While not frequent, storms can also cause temporary closures.

That said, ocean diving is possible throughout the year—conditions are typically assessed week by week, and calm days can happen in any season.

Cenote Diving – A Year-Round Adventure

Cenote diving is one of the true highlights of diving in Tulum—and the best part? It’s not affected by the weather!

Most cenotes maintain crystal-clear visibility no matter the season. Some, like The Pit, show stronger light beams in June, while others like Dos Ojos have more dramatic lighting in December. Cenotes like Angelita, Carwash, Tak Bi Ha, Nicte-Ha, and Casa Cenote aren’t noticeably affected by the angle of the sun, but offer unique conditions year-round.

After heavy rains, some cenotes (like Carwash or Casa Cenote) develop beautiful tannic acid layers—stunning visual effects that look like clouds from below. It’s a surreal and magical sight for divers!

So, When Should You Come?

Anytime! Tulum offers incredible diving all year round. When ocean conditions aren’t ideal, we always have the cenotes to explore.

If you prefer cooler weather and lively town vibes, visit during the dry season (especially December to March). If you’re looking for fewer crowds, tranquil cenotes, and don’t mind a bit of heat or the occasional mosquito, the wet season offers a more peaceful—and equally beautiful—experience.
